Bekaert

Sofie Bekaert is momenteel Manager Translationeel Programma binnen VIB en coördineert het Grand Challenges Programma om de maatschappelijke impact van het onderzoek te vergroten.

Ze is deeltijds hoofddocent aan de Faculteit Geneeskunde en Gezondheidswetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent - vakgroep Volksgezondheid en Eerstelijnsgeneeskunde - en werd opgeleid tot doctor in de Toegepaste Biologische Ingenieurswetenschappen. Na 10 jaar onderzoek, het opzetten van een onderzoeksplatform rond biologische veroudering, next generation sequencing en biomarkers, werd ze business developer en innovatiemanager aan de Universiteit Gent.

In 2010 initieerde ze het Clinical Research Center in het UZ Gent, waar ze de verantwoordelijkheid had over een toegewijd team in het dagelijks beheer van het centrale aanspreekpunt voor het faciliteren van translationele biomedische R&D (ethisch-juridische aspecten, databeheer en monitoring van klinische studies, O&I-management binnen het ziekenhuis, biobanking, big data).
Sofie Bekaert werkt mee aan strategische translationele initiatieven rond biobanking en translationeel onderzoek en innovatie, zowel op regionaal als (inter)nationaal niveau. Ze is voormalig voorzitter van de Raad van Bestuur van BBMRI.be, het Belgische knooppunt binnen het Europese biobankinfrastructuurnetwerk, is Adviseur binnen de European Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking en is betrokken bij meerdere maatschappelijke valorisatieprojecten rond stakeholder betrokkenheid, wetenschapscommunicatie/outreach en onderzoeksparticipatie.

Daarnaast is ze nauw betrokken bij multistakeholder dialoog en stakeholder interactie initiatieven. Ze is aangesteld als voorzitter van de stuurgroep van een nieuw fonds 'patiëntwaarde voor kankeronderzoek' binnen de Koning Boudewijnstichting.
